SUMMARY:Afrika Eye Film Festival - Mugabe\, My Dad and Me
DESCRIPTION:Tonderai Munyevu brings an adaption of his critically acclaimed play Mugabe\, My Dad & Me to Bristol as part of Afrika Eye 2022. Performing as himself Tonderai delves deep into his personal history and that of his country to tell his story. Born in Zimbabwe in 1982\, he was one of the so-called “born frees” – part of the generation born after Independence\, he has experienced major personal and political change. \nHe describes how the first cracks of prosperous Zimbabwe’s decline started to appear in the 1990s\, and his mother felt compelled to emigrate with him to England in search of stability\, a difficult and emotional transition\, but where he has continued to live. Tonderai’s story is interwoven with the compelling and spiritual sounds of the traditional ’mbira’ played by Shona cultural artist Millicent Chapanda. Music which has been at the heart of cultural ceremonies and celebrations of Zimbabwean life for centuries. \n7pm Doors \n7:30pm Start \nTickets £15/£10

SUMMARY:Afrika Eye Film Festival - The Last Shelter
DESCRIPTION:A double bill screening of documentaries focussing on migration from two perspectives: The Last Shelter and Dear Home Office. \nThe Last Shelter dir Ousmane Samassekou \nDeep in Mali\, on the edge of the Sahel Desert\, lies the peaceful city of Gao a stop off\, for those with their eyes set on Europe in hopes of finding opportunity\, safety\, and a better future. An emotional portrait of a place of temporary safety\, where tired travellers can seek respite from a journey into the unknown. As migration continues to flow from countries south of Mali like Burkina Faso\, Togo\, and Benin\, they can find support before continuing on into Algeria\, Spain and beyond. A uniquely beautiful and humane film about the loss of ‘home’ once you have made the decision to leave. \nDear Home Office (produced by Subject to Scrutiny) shines a light on the UK asylum system through the lived experience of recent asylum seekers and refugees\, using filmmaking as a critical tool to scrutinise the UK asylum system itself. This film is a collaborative project between Migration Mobilities Bristol\, University of Bristol and Bristol Refugee Rights. \nTickets: £12/£7
